Vision of Success: Students will become self-aware of how they positively and negatively contribute to project outcomes. 

The Project Management Principles homework assignment is used in a Project Management Career Skills Course at The Citadel Military College taken by junior and senior engineering students. This assignment is a learning activity in the Project Management Principles and Ethics Module but is embedded throughout the course for students to reflect on their behaviors during the semester group project.  

The Project Management Career Skills course focuses on the development of principled project leaders.  The technical project management and professional skills gained increase students' employability in today’s competitive workforce, regardless of their major or chosen profession. Students learn the key aspects of how to plan, execute, close a project, and manage their behaviors. The course incorporates the five process groups and project management principles from the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Seventh edition from the Project Management Institute. Specific areas of focus are on Project Integration, Planning, Scheduling, Quality, Risk, and Stakeholder Management. The importance of ethical and principled behavior is emphasized. 

During Week 2 of the course, students form teams for a semester-long group project and are briefed on the Project Management Principles homework assignment due Week 14. Students are given an overview of the homework assignment with a Project Management Principles Expectations Excel document. This document reviews the behavioral expectations to exemplify throughout the group project because individual behavior can impact project outcomes. 

Discussions on each of the 12 project management principles were held throughout course lectures. 

The objective of this learning activity is for students to identify and analyze how they can create positive or negative value on projects due to their behavior.

The Project Management Principles homework assignment can be embedded with any course group project for students to learn principled behaviors and align their actions to the expectations. Instructors should create opportunities to teach/embed the project management principles in their course lectures to properly support this assignment. Example slides and other materials are included below.

Homework Assignment:

The homework assignment for this module is a three-part self-assessment to provide introspection and measuring of the principled behaviors demonstrated by the students in the course group project from Weeks 2-14.

  • Part 1 - Requires students to rank project management principles based on how they feel they demonstrated each, numbering them 1-most demonstrated to 12-least demonstrated.
  • Part 2 - Requires students to create an improvement plan to improve the three least ranked project management principles from Part 1. A template is provided.
  • Part 3 - Requires students to provide a minimum 5 paragraph reflection of their behavior during the group project comparing their behaviors to what they learned from the project management principles module. A template is provided.

The goal of this homework assignment is for students to become aware of their behaviors and understand how their behaviors can positively or negatively affect project outcomes. This homework assignment will help students evaluate opportunities to create value starting with themselves.
